Today’s New York Times has a great article on the return of former New York Knicks guard Wat Misaka to Madison Square Garden. Misaka was a Nisei who helped take the University of Utah to both the NCAA and NIT championships. During the height of anti-Japanese racism, when other Japanese Americans were just returned from incarceration in Americ, an concentration camps, Misaka was drafted by the Knicks as the first person of color in the NBA.
He had not returned the the Garden since being cut by the Knicks in 1947. His life is the focus of “Transcending: the Wat Misaka Story,” a documentary which was shown in January in Little Tokyo at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center.
