Noodles: Bye to a Sumo Rebel

A startling development this week was the sudden retirement of Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu over allegations he assaulted a man in a drunken brawl outside of a nightclub. Asa has always been a thorn in the side of the stodgy Japan Sumo Association— behaving in a manner considered undignified for a yokozuna. I drew this cartoon at a time when he was criticized for clenching his fists and raising his arms up in victory. It seemed comical to me, as an American, used to the touchdown celebrations of Randy Moss or the Icky Shuffle. I’m sure we’ll be seeing some of that during the Super Bowl this Sunday. As for Asashoryu, maybe mixed martial arts?
