Imai, James Susumu, Ph.D. Born November 3, 1939, in Los Angeles. Beloved father and dedicated professor.
Education: Graduated John C. Fremont High School, Los Angeles, 1958; UCLA, BA in Physics, 1962; San Diego State University, MS in physics, 1963; UCLA, Ph.D. in physics, 1969. He was a professor of physics at California State University Dominguez Hills for 35 years. He was instrumental in building the physics program from its inception. He had a particular interest in working with medical technology students, electronic music students, and elementary school science teachers. He was a passionate hiker and fisherman, and worked as a field tester and consultant for Daiwa Corporation in fishing equipment design. He also introduced many Japanese natives to the delights of outdoor life in California.
He was an avid “rock hound,” especially upon his retirement, and was a member of the Mineralogical Society of Southern California, the Southern California Micro-Mineralogists, Palos Verdes Gem and Mineral Society, and Southern California Friends of Mineralogy.
A lifelong classical music enthusiast, he took great pleasure in his extensive collection of recordings on vinyl LPs.
Preceded in death by mother, Itsuko Mayeda Imai, and father, Takenosuke Imai, and brother, Barry Takeshi Imai. Survived by Leslie Ogg, Linda Ruth Imai, sons Joshua Imai, and Jonathan Imai, daughter, Jennifer Imai, his dogs, Mattie and Willow, and many caring relatives and friends.
Passed away peacefully July 8, 2011 after a short illness. According to his wishes, no formal services are scheduled. However, a memorial open house will be held at the home he shared with Leslie, on Sunday, July 31, 2011 from 12 PM to 6 PM. Guests are welcome to stop by and share memories, photographs, and visit with the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hope University “High Hopes” program would be appreciated. He was a keen supporter of this organization during his lifetime.
