The Hawaii State Department of Transportation held a ceremony to rename a portion of Saddle Road to the Daniel K. Inouye Highway on Sept. 7, which would have been the late senator’s 89th birthday. The nine-mile portion from Mile Post 42 to the Mamalahoa Highway (Route 190) was opened to the public following the ceremony’s completion. Pictured from left are Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Irene Hirano Inouye, the senator’s widow, and Hawaii County (Big Island) Mayor Billy Kenoi. Kahu Daniel Akaka Jr., son of Inouye’s longtime Senate colleague, conducted the blessing.
