Little Tokyo will celebrate National Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and Older Americans Month with a Senior Celebration on Thursday, May 22, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Little Tokyo Towers’ Shimozono Hall, 455 E. Third St. (between Central and San Pedro), Los Angeles.
President Obama has proclaimed May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month to reflect on and acknowledge the contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Each May, the nation also recognizes the experiences of elders and the roles they play in shaping our world during Older Americans Month.
In addition to entertainment, the celebration will promote the health and well-being of seniors through exercise, nutrition, and advocacy. Seniors are advocating for senior issues such as re-authorization of the Federal Older Americans Act, local street improvements, and ongoing funding for culturally appropriate services and programs.
Invited guests include 14th District Councilmember Jose Huizar, 34th District Rep. Xavier Becerra, 53rd District Assemblymember John A. Perez, 22nd District Sen. Kevin De Leon, and former Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis.
The program will be in English, Japanese, and Korean.
Presented by LTSC Community Development Corporation, a non-profit community-based organization that has been providing services for over 29 years to the greater Los Angeles community. Programs include but are not limited to: assistance for victims of domestic violence, support groups, child abuse and neglect outreach, emergency food and shelter assistance, affordable housing, and community redevelopment.
