Jeremy Scheier (National Park Service)

SAN FRANCISCO — The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Jeremy Scheier to serve as the superintendent of Manzanar National Historic Site in Independence starting July 14.

Scheier most recently served as the administrative officer at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. He was previously the administrative officer at Kenai Fjords National Park in Seward, Alaska, after being introduced to the NPS as a co-consultant at Yellowstone National Park while attending business school.

“We are excited to have Jeremy serve as a steward for Manzanar National Historic Site and support the important work of preserving the site and telling the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II,” said Pacific West Regional Director David Szymanski. “He has a commitment to service, a strong connection to the mission, and takes a collaborative approach to his leadership.”

Scheier will lead the historic site, which was established in 1992 and preserves one of 10 major camps where the U.S. government incarcerated Japanese American citizens and Japanese immigrants, who were barred from becoming naturalized citizens, during World War II.

Scheier, a Pittsburgh native, is looking forward to furthering the mission of Manzanar with park staff in collaboration with the Japanese American community, partner organizations, and local and state government agencies.

“It’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to serve a site dedicated to civil rights, where we can learn from our past and ensure a better tomorrow,” he said. “Honesty and transparency are core tenets for me on a personal level. I will be dedicated to sharing Manzanar’s history with integrity, professionalism, and humility.”

Scheier served as an infantry and reconnaissance officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2008 to 2016. He was stationed in Southern California and Okinawa.

He graduated with a bachelor of arts in geology from Colgate University in 2007 and received a Master of Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley in 2019.

Scheier will relocate to California with Coho, his three-year-old black labrador retriever.
