GARDENA — A free educational workshop for Asian American seniors and their caregivers will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29 and Sept. 12, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute.

An individual consultation session by appointment only will follow on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. These events are free and open to the public and parking is also free.

The workshop series will help seniors and their adult children to begin a conversation on planning financially for the future. The program will be presented in English with simultaneous interpretation in Japanese.

As the baby boomers continue to age, the needs for long-term care services is expected to increase dramatically, but many Americans are not financially prepared to pay for it. Long-term care (extended stays in a nursing home or paying for in-home caregivers) is generally not covered by health insurance or Medicare. On Aug. 29, the California Partnership for Long-Term Care will discuss ways to use long-term care policies to plan for your future needs.

On Sept. 12, a discussion will be held on real-world retirement planning. Planning for the future can be daunting, especially our finances. We all have worries whether our finances will last us through retirement and beyond. This workshop will explore the universal reality of retirement, as well as the many savings and investment options individuals can rely on when planning for the future and offer information relevant to each stage in a working adult’s professional life – from the twenty-somethings to the final years before retirement.

Little Tokyo Service Center is working with the Foundation for Financial Planning to offer free one-on-one sessions with professionals from the Financial Planning Association on Nov. 7. The sessions may cover a wide range of personal finance topics such as budgeting, credit and debt, retirement, taxes, estate planning, small business, and more. There will be a limited number of 30-minute sessions, so call in advance to reserve an appointment time. Pre-registration is required for admission to the seminar, which is open to all residents of Los Angeles County.
