Rimban Hiroshi Jokai Abiko is retiring as rimban (head minister) of the Nishi Hongwanji Los Angeles Betsuin.

Abiko was the ninth rimban for Nishi Hongwanji and has served in this capacity since 2009.

He graduated from Sacramento State, earned his master’s degree in general Buddhism at Ryukoku University in Kyoto, and received his kyoshi ordination in 1970. He has since served with the Buddhist Churches of America at the San Jose Betsuin, Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, and most recently, the Buddhist Church of San Francisco.

A retirement luncheon will be held on Sunday, Aug. 25, at noon at the Quiet Cannon, 901 N. Via San Clemente, Montebello. Cost: $40 per person. For information, call (213) 680-9130.
