The City of Los Angeles issued a posthumous proclamation to honor the late Keiko Fukuda, the only woman to be promoted to 10th dan in judo, who died last February. Fukuda, the last surviving student of judo founder Jigoro Kano, established a dojo for women in San Francisco and is the subject of a documentary, “Mrs. Judo.” The brief ceremony was held Jan. 19 at the Japanese American National Museum, with, from left: Fukuda protégée Eiko Shepherd, John Esaki, director of the Media Arts Center at JANM, and Gary Goltz, representative for Councilmember Tom LaBonge and president of the U.S. Judo Association.
