George Tashima
August 29, 1925 – January 9, 2021
George Tashima passed away at home in Torrance after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 95. Born and raised on a sharecropping farm near Salt Lake City, he served in the US Army during the Korean War, then attended Columbia University, receiving a BS and Master’s degree in English, and a certificate to teach Japanese from NYU. He taught both those subjects in the LAUSD (Dorsey & Banning High) for several years. He spent his retirement years doing what he loved—traveling, gardening, reading books, listening to classical music and watching public television. A chronicler of our Tashima ancestry, he will be missed by all the relatives. He was devoted to his grandchildren, visiting them often in Chicago, and shared with them many memories of his life, as well as family history.
He is survived by his wife, Myriam, sons Paul and Ian, daughter-in-law Jennie, and grandchildren Taylor, Isabelle, and Nicholas; also sister Ruby Mio, and many nieces and nephews in California, Utah, and Virginia. A memorial service will be held at a later date due to the pandemic.
