Funeral services for the late Matsuo Shimomaye, 97-year-old, Kibei Nisei, Utah-born and resident of North Hills, who passed away on July 2, 2021, will be held on Saturday, July 24, 9:30 a.m. at Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, 815 E. 1st St, Los Angeles, Calif.

He was raised and educated in Hiroshima, Japan. He attended a university in Tokyo, Japan, studying marine biology.

He was an amazing survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. After the war, he settled in West Los Angeles. He married and was a gardener. Later he and his wife started a ground-cover nursery business in the San Fernando Valley. He continued the business for 45 years, retiring at 85 years old.

He is survived by daughters, Susan Youko (Wesley Mizutani) Shimomaye and Kathy Taeko Yamaguchi of Missouri; grandchildren, Brandon Toshio and Kristen Hiromi Mizutani, Kelli Emiko Yamaguchi and Kyle Kiyoshi Yamaguchi of Missouri. Also he is survived by many nieces and nephews in California and Japan.
