Rendering of the completed Umeya project.

Umeya Mural Community Paint Day will take place on Sunday, June 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Terasaki Budokan, 249 S. Los Angeles St. (between Second and Third streets) in Little Tokyo.

Prepare to paint a mural for The Umeya, Little Tokyo Service Center’s new affordable housing development, which is scheduled to open in late 2025. Hone your art skills with Skid Row artist ShowzArt in preparation for painting the mural.

All ages and skill levels welcome. Supplies and snacks provided.

The Umeya project, at the intersection of the Little Tokyo and Skid Row neighborhoods, will redevelop the iconic Umeya Rice Cake Company factory and warehouse into a transit-oriented, mixed-use development featuring 175 deeply affordable apartments. Half of all units will be set aside as permanent supportive housing (PSH). The ground floor is dedicated to approximately 13,000 square feet of community, commercial, and service provider space.

In addition to the mural, this highly sustainable LEED-certified building will feature a 4,000-square-foot landscaped courtyard and an exhibit honoring Umeya as a three-generation, Japanese American family-owned business.
