Emmy-winning series “Shōgun,” “Hacks” and “Baby Reindeer” were among the programs scoring nominations April 17 for the 85th annual Peabody Awards, which will be presented in Beverly Hills in June.
The Peabody Awards honor “storytelling that reflects the social issues and emerging voices of our day.” They will be presented June 1 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in a ceremony hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr.
HBO’s “Hacks,” FX’s “Shōgun” and Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer’’ were all nominated in the Entertainment category. Also nominated were HBO’s “Alex Edelman: Just for Us,” FX’s “Clipped,’’ HBO’s “Fantasmas,’’ PBS’ “Mr. Bates vs. The Post Office,” Netflix’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” HBO’s “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” Netflix’s “Ripley,” FX’s “Say Nothing” and FX’s “We Are Lady Part.”
In “Shōgun,” creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks reimagine James Clavell’s classic tale through a modern lens, exploring what it means for two cultures to collide and transform one another with empathy and authenticity. By involving Japanese collaborators in every facet of production, they move beyond the “stranger in a strange land” trope to create a more inclusive, respectful, and culturally rich storytelling process that could serve as a new standard for global filmmaking. A second season is being planned.

The cast includes Hiroyuki Sanada (who is also one of the show’s producers) as Yoshii Toranaga, Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko, Cosmo Jarvis as John Blackthorne, Tadanobu Asano as Kashiki Yabushige, and Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji.
The series has received numerous honors, including 18 Emmys, four Golden Globes, four Critics Choice Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, one Film Independent Spirit Award, along with recognition from the Directors Guild of America, Producers Guild of America, Writers Guild of America, Art Directors Guild, Costume Designers Guild, Visual Effects Society and Television Critics Association, among others.
Peabody nominees in the Documentaries category include MTV’s “Black Box Diaries,” journalist Shiori Ito’s deeply personal documentary chronicling her journey of coming forward as a survivor of rape in Japan, where sexual violence is highly stigmatized and rarely reported. Through self-recorded video diaries, secret conversations, and raw emotional honesty, Ito exposes the systemic silencing of victims and the personal cost of speaking out, ultimately transforming her pain into a powerful call for societal change.
“Black Box Diaries” has won awards from the National Board of Review, San Francisco International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival and Zurich Film Festival, among others. It was also nominated for an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize, SXSW Film Festival’s Audience Award, and more.
