An automatic sprinkler system helped minimize damage to a Woodland Hills sushi restaurant after a fire broke out in its kitchen on Sunday.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. at California Roll & Sushi, 6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd., which was closed.
Los Angeles Fire Department crews had the blaze extinguished soon after, said Brian Kan, a friend of the restaurant’s manager.
The restaurant suffered minor damage in the kitchen area, said Kan, who came to the restaurant with the manager, who is his girlfriend.
“We’re just cleaning out the water right now,” he said when reached by phone.
A building inspector was expected to arrive later in the morning to determine if the restaurant could reopen for business, said Kan.
Firefighters said the heating system could have been the cause, he said.
A fire department spokesman was not available overnight.
