Bernice Ayako (Tsumori) Kodama
Bernice Ayako (Tsumori) Kodama passed away peacefully on June 8, after battling with complications from a series of strokes over the past 10 months. She is survived by her son, Ken; and daughter-in-law, Debra of Chula Vista; and her two grandchildren, Jillian and Garrett. She is also survived by 2 nieces and 2 nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Luke; husband, James; parents, Shinichi and Yeino Tsumori; sister, Mabel Abe; and brother, Paul Tsumori.

Born in the Sacramento area on June 26, 1924, she grew up in the San Gabriel Valley community of Tujunga. During World War II was she interned with her family in the Amache Internment camp in Colorado. She married James in 1954 and lived for the next 40 years in El Centro, Calif. where her husband was a farmer and she worked for JC Pennys and Sears.

In 1997, she moved to Chula Vista. Over the past 12 years, she enjoyed playing bingo at the Japanese American VFW Hall in National City, visiting the local Indian gaming casinos, going to family reunions, and sneaking treats to her son’s dogs Miso and Gohan.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Ocean View United Church of Christ (2550 Fairfield St., San Diego). Burial will take place on Friday, June 26 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro.

Albert Yasuaki Oda
Beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Albert Yasuaki Oda, 78, passed away on June 2, in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. with his daughter and caregiver at his side. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii on Nov. 3, 1930, Albert served in the Armed Forces doing communications work in Greenland during the Korean War between 1951 to 1953. In 1956, he married Ellen Miyoko Okinaka and moved to California to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He worked at Menasco, a landing gear design company, for 30 years. He retired shortly after his wife, Ellen, passed away on Oct. 8, 1987. Albert spent the next 20 years doing volunteer work at the Seicho-No-Ie Church in Gardena, Calif. He was a quiet loving husband and father who brought all his children closer to God.

Albert is survived by his children, Duane (Rosemarie), Denise (Jeffrey), Teri (Stan) and Dwight (Cathy), grandchildren, Aaron, Michael, Chad, Kevin, Jessica, Kristen, Alyssa and Makena; and siblings, Martha, Herbert, Betty, Elaine and Michael. He was preceded in death by his sister, Margie; and brother, Kenneth.

The memorial service will be held at the Green Hills Mortuary Chapel, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., on June 20, from 11 a.m. to noon.
