March 6, 1921—March 15, 2010 Resident of Rossmoor
Akira W. Hara passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on March
15. Affectionately known as Aki, his passing was “but a comma” in a
life well lived. Fluent in both English and Japanese, Aki served in
the US Army during WWII and the Korean War. Thanks to the GI Bill of
Rights, Aki graduated from the University of Southern California as a
member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and subsequently received
his CPA certification.
His career afforded Aki and family the opportunity to travel to Japan
twice, where he worked as a civilian for the Defense Contract Audit
Agency (DCAA) managing the Far East. Aki retired in 1981.
In retirement Aki spent much of his time traveling with friends,
playing golf, poker and bridge. He will be missed as a husband,
father and friend.
He is survived by his bride of 59 years, Lillian; their four
children, Mari (Gary) Harbour, Mark (Patty), Bob (Monika), and Mike
(Estrella); and their five grandchildren, Gabriel, Kirstie, Kyle
(Katie McKnight), Kenji and Sam. He is also survived by his sister,
Shizuyo Kawada. He was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Hara.
A memorial service will be held on March 28, at 1 p.m. at the
Hillside Clubhouse in Rossmoor, Walnut Creek, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the East Bay
or St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
