Emeryville Taiko was initiated as an Oakland taiko class for children by Yuri Morita with Susan Horn as her assistant under the guidance of Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka, founder of San Francisco Taiko Dojo. When Morita decided to go to Japan, Horn became instructor of the group.
Senior drum builder Jenny Fuss also began workshops in taiko building, which resulted in more than 20 drums, all hand-built by Emeryville Taiko members. Under Horn’s direction, Emeryville Taiko has begun intensely focusing energy on developing in new directions.
