Masato Baba, known for his work with the On Ensemble and TaikoProject, was nominated for a 2012 Ovation Award in the category of lyrics/music for an original musical for “The Brahmin and the Tiger” (Company of Angels/hereandnow theatre company).

The award, presented Monday, went to Parmer Fuller and Michael Kramer for “Stations: A Los Angeles Holiday Story” (Ensemble Theatre Company and Boom Kat Dance Theatre). Also nominated were Matthew Fogel, Isaac Laskin, and David Richman for “Hey, Morgan!” (Black Dahlia Theatre).

Other winners included Lap Chi Chu in the lighting design (large theater) category for “The Convert” (Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre).

The LA Stage Alliance celebrated theatrical excellence and achievement during the September 2011-August 2012 season by recognizing 13 Southern California theater companies in a ceremony at the Los Angeles Theatre.

“The Brahmin and the Tiger” is a collection of fairy tales gathered from throughout Asia and the Pacific Islands, blending oral tradition with original music and movement. The director was John Miyasaki.
