BUENA PARK — Since 2005, the Southeast Los Angeles/North Orange County (SELANOCO) chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), working with the Nishizu family, has offered a memorial scholarship in honor of long-time community leader and activist Clarence Nishizu, a charter board member. Applications are currently being accepted.

The chapter will award up to $1,000 in scholarship funds at the SELANOCO-JACL installation luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. The awardee must be available to attend.
Clarence Iwao Nishizu was active in the Orange County and Los Angeles County Japanese American communities as both a businessman and philanthropist. During his notably successful life, he founded the Orange County Chapter JACL, and helped start four other JACL chapters in Southern California: Riverside, San Gabriel, North San Diego County and SELANOCO. He passed away on Jan. 26, 2005 at the age of 95, and the scholarship was been established to remember his many accomplishments.
Eligibility for the scholarship is limited to JACL members only. A membership application and fee can be submitted along with the scholarship application. Applicants must be full-time undergraduates of an institution of higher learning during the 2012-13 academic year. Completed applications must be postmarked by the deadline of Saturday, Dec. 15.
