Karaoke, one of the great inventions from Japan, is a form of entertainment in which amateur singers provide the lead vocal to songs as they sing along with recorded music. Contestants are being sought for a karaoke contest on Saturday, July 20, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Zenshuji Soto Temple, 123 S. Hewitt St., Little Tokyo.

Singers must bring their own prerecorded music either on CD or tape. There will be no monitor to view lyrics. Trophies will be awarded to the three best singers.

If you wish to participate, call Zenshuji at (213) 624-8658 to register. This contest is one part of the entertainment scheduled for the Obon Carnival. Everyone is invited to sing or to enjoy the songs and the Obon Carnival.
