People of all ages, in both Japanese attire and street clothes, participated in the ondo at the Venice Japanese Community Center’s Summer Festival on June 22 and 23. The ondo instructor was Fujima Seiyumi.Wes Hayashi of Koshin Taiko kept the beat for the dancers.Entertainment on the indoor stage included odori by Fujima Seiyumi Kai (pictured), hula by Halau Keali’i O Nalani under Kumu Keali’i Ceballos, drumming by Koshin Taiko, and line dancing.Martial arts demonstrations were given by Venice Karate Club (pictured), Venice Aikido Club, Venice Judo Club, and Venice Kendo Club.Among the groups operating food booths were Venice Pioneer Project (above), selling baked goods, and Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple’s Jr. YBA (below), selling dango.
An on-stage demonstration of flower arranging was given by the Shunyo Ryu school of ikebana.Cultural displays included bonsai (pictured), ikebana, calligraphy and paintings.Games of skill included the toilet roll throw (above) and the dunk tank (below).
