Dance Downtown will present the final event of this year’s Obon/ondo season in the Southland on Friday, Aug. 23, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Music Center Plaza, bordered by Temple Street, North Grand Avenue, First Street and Hope Street in Los Angeles.
Many dancers from local Buddhist temples and Japanese American community centers are expected to attend.
Everyone is invited to a night of ondo under the stars. Wear your ondo best as instructors lead the crowd through traditional Japanese festival dances alongside live drummers. No experience necessary; lessons for beginners will be given throughout the evening.
First-come, first-served. No tickets required or RSVPs accepted. Paid parking is available in the lot underneath the plaza.
Dance Downtown is a series of mass-dancing events, including salsa, tango, line-dancing, Bollywood, K-pop and disco, held in the Music Center Plaza between May and September. The series will close this year with ’60s Night in the plaza on Sept. 6 and samba in Grand Park on Sept. 20.
The plaza is home to the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. For more information, visit www.musiccenter.org.
