SAN FRANCISCO — The Japan Center Malls and the Japantown Merchants Association will present the second annual Sumo Champions Exhibition in the Japantown Peace Plaza, Post and Buchanan streets, on Sunday, Sept. 22.
The whole family is invited to meet real sumo wrestlers, learn about life as a sumo and watch live matches.
11 a.m.: Kids’ meet & greet
12, 1:30 and 3 p.m.: Matches
4 p.m.: Meet & greet with wrestlers
The matches will feature the following wrestlers:
• Byamba, 6’1″, 370 lbs., Mongolian, three-time world sumo champion
• Kelly, 6’0″, 430 lbs., three-time U.S. sumo champion and Guinness World Record holder as the heaviest human ever to run a marathon (he completed in the Los Angeles Marathon in 2008 and 2011)
• Big Joe, 6’1″, 350 lbs., Tongan, multiple medalist at many U.S. Sumo Opens and other tournaments
The Japan Center Malls and the adjacent blocks of Japantown are home to scores of unique shops and restaurants that provide an opportunity for visitors and locals alike to explore and experience the customs and culture of Japan right in the heart of San Francisco.
