State Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) on Feb. 18 announced that George Takei, the prominent civil rights activist and actor best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on “Star Trek,” endorsed Lieu’s bid for Congressional District 33.

Takei joins a list of over 70 local and state elected official endorsers.
“I have known Ted Lieu for many years, and he has repeatedly championed civil rights and equality issues. We stood side-by-side and fought hard against Proposition 8 [which banned same-sex marriages],” said Takei. “Ted’s determination, intellect, and grit resulted in the passage of his landmark, first-in-the-nation ban on harmful gay ‘conversion’ therapy for minors, a law that has now been copied by other states. Ted will be a fantastic member of Congress and it is my honor to endorse Ted.”
Lieu, whose district comprises more than 80 percent of the voters in CD 33, is a long-time resident of the district, an Air Force veteran and a former member of the Torrance City Council and the State Assembly.
The 33rd Congressional District stretches from the Palos Verdes Peninsula to Malibu along the Los Angeles County coast.
