GARDENA — The Buddhist Churches of America’s Institute for Buddhist Studies and Center for Buddhist Education present their Spring Pacific Seminar, “The Benefits of a Life of Shinjin,” on Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gardena Buddhist Church, 1517 W 166th St., Gardena.

The keynote speaker is Prof. Nobuhiro Fukagawa of Ryukoku University in Kyoto.

The seminar will examine various aspects of the Shin Buddhist concept of shinjin, sometimes translated as “faith,” but a term that oftentimes defies English translation.  Fukagawa will lecture in Japanese and Rev. Mutsumi Wondra of Orange County Buddhist Church will provide an English translation.

In addition to the keynote talks, Rev. Dr. David Matsumoto will present a lecture in English on the same subject. He is the director of the Institute of Buddhist Studies’ Center for Contemporary Jodo Shinshu Studies. The English moderator will be Rev. Marvin Harada, co-director of CBE, resident minister of Orange County Buddhist Church, and executive assistant to the BCA bishop. The Japanese moderator will be Rev. Kiyonobu Kuwahara, co-director of CBE and coordinator of the Hongwanji Jodo Shinshu Correspondence Course.
