The Japanese Institute of Sawtelle (JIS) is sponsoring the 2014 Sakura Festival at Stoner Park, 1835 Stoner Ave., West Los Angeles, on Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 pm.

During the program, special recognition will be presented to Tak Nishi, a popular Westside resident serving the Japanese American community through entertainment. Norikazu Maeda and Reiko Maeda, pioneers and longtime supporters of the postwar Sawtelle Judo School, will also be recognized.

Presenters will be 11th District City Councilmember Mike Bonin and Vice Consul Taeko Yamada of the Consulate General of Japan.

Jack Ohigashi, Alice Umeda and Kimiye Inabu will be recognized for turning 90 years old. Kuni Ishiwada, who is 80, will also be given special recognition.

Colors will be presented by West L.A. Troop 39.

The program will culminate with Field Day events (undo-kai), where young athletes will compete for prizes.
