The Japanese American Cultural and Community Center will present “On the Veranda: Miso Tasting” on Saturday, April 19, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Miso (みそ or 味噌) is a traditional Japanese seasoning produced by fermenting rice, barley, and/or soybeans with salt. The result is a thick paste used for sauces and spreads, pickling vegetables or meats, and mixing with dashi soup stock to serve as miso soup or misoshiru (味噌汁), a Japanese culinary staple.
The workshop by Miyako Oriental Foods Inc. will have an assortment of miso dishes that will enable guests to taste the variety of miso cooking. The company was incorporated in 1976 and became the first in the U.S. to manufacture Japanese miso.
Admission is $25 general, $20 for JACCC members. Reservations are required and space is limited.
JACCC is located at 244 S. San Pedro St. (between Second and Third streets) in Little Tokyo. For more information, call (213) 628-2725 or visit www.jaccc.org.
