SACRAMENTO – Gov. Jerry Brown on June 11 announced the appointment of Kenton Shimozaki, 17, of Stockton as the student member of the California State Board of Education, effective July 31.

Shimozaki has been a student at Lincoln High School since 2011 and has served as student member of the Lincoln Unified School District Board of Trustees since 2014. He is president of the Lincoln High School Interact Club, where he has held multiple positions since 2011, including secretary in 2013.

Shimozaki has been secretary of Lincoln High School’s School Site Council since 2011 and is a visiting committee member of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. He is a member of the Lincoln High School varsity tennis team and the cross-country team, where he was sophomore team captain.

This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Shimozaki is not registered to vote.

The current student member of the State Board of Education is Jesse Zhang of Rancho Palos Verdes, who attends the California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS). He took office in September 2013.
