May Kazuko Sutow Okamoto passed away peacefully at her home in Henderson, Nev. on May 29, 2014, at the age of 95, and was laid to rest at Green Hills Memorial Park on June 11, 2014, with Rev. Ron Miyake of Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley officiating. She was born on Sept. 21, 1918 in Fukuoka, Japan, and immigrated to the U.S. at age two. The eldest of her five siblings, May was interned at Heart Mountain, Wyoming before returning to Los Angeles. An avid swing dancer into her nineties, May embraced each day with a positive attitude and a zest for life.
She is predeceased by her first husband, Fred Sutow; mother, Sumi Nakano; brothers, Frank, Lane and Lyle Nakano; sister, Frances Munemura.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert Okamoto of Nevada; sister, Lucy Wada; sons, Carl (Carole) Sutow and Glenn (Janice) Sutow; daughter, Jeri (Darrell) DeCastro; step-son, David (Amy) Okamoto; step-daughter, Jeri (Daniel) Okamoto-Floyd; grandchildren, Leslie and Ric Sutow, Nicole and Steven DeCastro, Lauren and Jeffrey Okamoto, Rachel and Jacquelyn Floyd; great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn May Sutow; also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
