STOCKTON — Buddhist Church of Stockton, 2820 Shimizu Dr. in Stockton, will hold its Cultural and Food Bazaar on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 3, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Obon dancing will take place Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. The full schedule of events is as follows:
Saturday, Aug. 2
All day: Ikebana exhibits by Ohara School in Mini Chapel area, bonsai exhibits in Social Hall, exhibit by Sacramento Japanese Sword Club
11 a.m.: Opening ceremony and performance by Stockton Bukkyo Taiko in front of the Chapel
12 p.m.: Performance by Kokusei Ryu Shigin; games begin
12:30 p.m.: Demonstration by Stockton Judo Club, led by instructor Jack Ferrill
1:30 p.m.: Chapel tour by Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi, who will explain the meaning of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism
2 p.m.: Koto performance by Masazuka Kai of San Francisco
2:45 p.m.: Performance by Stockton Bukkyo Taiko
3:30 p.m.: Japanese classical dance by students of Bando Junjiro
4 p.m.: Demonstration by Sison Karate Do, led by instructor Lim Sison
4:30 p.m.: Minyo performance by Setsuko Babaoka and students
4:45 p.m.: Kendo demonstration by Anthony Cabral Sensei, 4th-degree instructo
5:30 p.m.: Performance by Escrima Bahalana Club (Filipino martial arts), led by Grand Master Tony Somera and Master Instructor Joel Juanitas
7 p.m.: Bon Odori — parade of kimono-clad dancers in the Courtyard
Sunday, Aug. 3
All day: Ikebana exhibits in Mini Chapel area; bonsai exhibits in Social Hall; display of Mataro dolls, a type of Japanese kimekomi doll-making, by instructor Isako Wasano in Social Hall
11 a.m.: Food Bazaar begins. Dishes include tempura, chicken teriyaki, kushiyaki, Spam musubi, udon, sushi, curry rice, pastries, plus snacks and drinks from Sakura Japanese Groceries and Gifts.
11:45 a.m.: Ukulele Strummers of Stockton in the Courtyard
12 p.m.: Games begin
12:30 p.m. Performance by Sacramento Taiko Dan
1:30 p.m.: Performance of multi-style escrima led by Maestro Dexter Labonog and Head Instructor June Gotico; School of Omotesenke chanoyu (tea ceremony) demonstration with audience participation in Dharma School Classroom 3
2 p.m.: Cortez Karaoke Singers, directed by Suzumi Stewart
2:30 p.m.: Kendo demonstration by Anthony Carbal Sensei
3 p.m.: Chapel tour by Rev. Yukiko Motoyoshi
3:30 p.m.: Chanoyu demonstration in Dharma School Classroom 3; demonstration by New School Aikido, led by Sensei John Smartt
4 p.m.: Hawaiian/Polynesian entertainment by Na Hoku Mai Kanoelani
4:30 p.m.: Bonsai demonstration by Sam Adina of Stockton
6 p.m.: Raffle drawing in Gym. Prizes include $2,000 cash, DVD home theater system, DVD player, 10 cash prizes at $100 each, nine cash prizes at $50 each. $1 per ticket. Need not be present to win.
