GARDENA — The Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI) and the Cultural News present “Okinawa Slide Show and Sample Tours” by Professor Robert Walker on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the GVJCI Nisei Veteran Hall. Admission is free.
Walker is the author of “Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands: The First Comprehensive Guide to the Entire Ryukyu Island Chain,” published by Tuttle Publishing.
Walker is also a professor of law at the University of Maryland-Asian Division in Okinawa. He has developed his expertise on the Okinawan islands by spending over 12 years living and traveling the entire Ryuku island chain.
Illustrated with over 200 color photographs and 40 maps, “Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands” is the first comprehensive guide to the subtropical 150-island chain that stretches across 600 miles from Japan to Taiwan. These are some of the most stunningly beautiful islands in the world.
Walker will discuss his new book in overall terms of all the Ryukyus, and then focus on two possible trips to make — concentrating on the islands to the north of Okinawa, specifically Amami, and concentrating on the islands to the south, specifically the Yaeyamas.
The GVJCI is located at 1964 W. 162nd St. in Gardena. For more information, call the GVJCI office at (310) 324-6611 or email info@jci-gardena.org.
Hello Professor Walker!!! I have dreamed of making such a journey. My grandfather came from Kagoshima in 1800’s escaping the war—he was a samurai on losing side, island hopped and I believe he perished on Kerema isles. I believe my ancestors are buried there because my grandfather used to go there when I was 4
I would love to see your presentation, Thank You!!
