The Buddhist Churches of America’s Obon season in the Bay Area will conclude with events on opposite sides of the bay.

San Mateo Buddhist Temple, 2 S. Claremont St. in San Mateo, will hold its Bon Odori on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. Dance practices will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, and Thursday, Aug. 7. Everyone is invited to participate.

Also on Saturday, cemetery visits will be conducted at Skylawn at 9:30 a.m., Golden Gate at 10:10 a.m., Olivet in Colma at 10:40 a.m. and the Japanese Cemetery at 11 a.m.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, Obon and Hatsubon service will be held at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. Shousei Hanayama from Watsonville and Rev. David Matsumoto from Berkeley presiding.

Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church, 32975 Alvarado-Niles Rd. in Union City, will hold its Obon Festival/Bazaar on Saturday with food sales from 5 to 6 p.m. and dancing at 7 p.m. There will also be a taiko performance.

Dance practices will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4; Wednesday, Aug. 6; and Thursday, Aug. 7. Attending dance practice is not a requirement to participate in Bon Odori.

On Sunday at 10 a.m., SACBC will conduct it annual Obon/Hatsubon services for those who have lost loved ones. Hatsubon is for those who have passed away since the last Obon. Guest speaker will be Rev. Kodo Umezu of the BCA.
