“Empowering Our Community: Igniting a Passion for Justice” is the theme for the Pacific Southwest District JACL’s 18th annual Awards Benefit Luncheon, to be held Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles.

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m.; program from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The purpose of the awards benefit is to honor those in our community whose life and work reflect the ideals and legacy of the JACL. The Pacific Southwest District will highlight its programs — The Nikkei LGBTQ Initiative, API RISE, Bridging Communities, and Local Leaders — looking back on the progress that has been made and the progress to come.

Community Hero honoree: Mary Adams Urashima, Historic Wintersburg Preservation Task Force

Community Partner honoree: Asians and Pacific Islanders for LGBT Equality

Governor’s Award: riKu Matsuda, senior intergroup relations specialist, L.A. County Human Relations Commission

Individual tickets are $125. Tables (10 tickets) are $1,250. Sponsor categories: Bronze ($2,500), Silver ($3,500), Gold ($5,000) and Platinum ($10,000).
