GARDENA — A poetry performance book event will be held Sunday, March 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Hall of the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute, 1964 W. 162nd St. in Gardena.

nakano-storytellerGenie Nakano, poet, columnist, and GVJCI’s yogini and tanka sensei, will read from her latest poetry collection, “Storyteller.”

A Sansei born in East Los Angeles, Nakano (http://genienakano.com) experiments with movement, dance and music when performing at open mics and spoken-word events. Her poetry appears in The Rafu Shimpo and The Gardena Valley News. She is widely published in journals, and her recent haibun, tanka/tales book “Enter the Stream” is available on Amazon.

Joining Nakano from Australia will be Amelia Fielden, a professional translator of Japanese literature and an enthusiastic writer of tanka in English. Also performing will be musicians Alan Furutani (flute) and Trace Fukuhara (percussion).
