The Japanese American Bar Association (JABA) will hold its annual Installation and Awards Gala on Friday, May 1, at The Center at Cathedral Plaza in downtown Los Angeles, with a reception at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m.

This year’s gala will feature keynote speaker Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles), who is chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

JABA will be bestowing the Diversity Leadership Award to NYU professor and best-selling author Kenji Yoshino (“Speak Now: Marriage Equality on Trial,” “Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights,” “A Thousand Times More Fair: What Shakespeare’s Plays Teach Us About Justice”), and the Community Leadership Award to Academy Award-winning film director and actor Chris Tashima (“Visas and Virtue,” “Lil Tokyo Reporter,” “Under the Blood Red Sun”). Members of East West Players will provide entertainment.

The gala is JABA’s biggest event of the year, where it is presents the achievements of JABA and the honorees, furnishes an excellent networking forum, and provides the JABA Educational Foundation with a platform to raise funds for law student scholarships.

Individual tickets are $125. For more information and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.jabaonline.org or email rsvp@jabaonline.org.
