Atsumi Art Sugita, 88-year-old, native Californian and longtime resident of Monterey Park, passed away on Sunday, July 31. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1946, he graduated from the Defense Language Institute at the Monterey Presidio and served as a translator in occupied Japan. He later earned his architectural license and worked for the City of Los Angeles for 35 years in the L.A. City Engineering Department. A public graveside funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hills (Gate 10 – Cherry Blossom), www.rosehills.com (562) 699-0921. He is survived by his wife, Matsuyo; daughter, Eileen (Walt) Patterson; brother, John (Harriet) Sugita; along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
