Mits Kataoka
March 12, 1934 – May 24, 2018
Mits Kataoka, Los Angeles-born and retired UCLA Professor, passed away on May 24, 2018 in Pasadena, CA after a long illness. He leaves wife Susan McCoin, son Mark (Cheryl Lai), grandchildren Marisa and Nolan, and sister Lilly (Shig) Kawashiri and her family. His first wife Irene Wakamatsu, DDS, predeceased him.
Mits was interned with his family at Heart Mountain, WY; after the war, his family moved to Bridgeton, NJ to work at Seabrook Farms. He graduated from UCLA and served in the U.S. Army Reserves, 1957-66.
He joined the UCLA faculty in 1965 and mentored many students and faculty until retirement in 2001. Mits worked with businesses and government agencies to pioneer the use by non-experts of newly available communication technologies.
A memorial service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena, CA on June 16, 2018, at 10 AM.
