Mary Kusuda
1924 – 2019
Mary Kusuda, born in El Centro, California passed away peacefully in Orange, California on August 26, 2019 at age 95. She joins her beloved husband of 58 years, Mitsugi “Mike” Kusuda, and is survived by their children Susan (Chris) Bacon, Ernie (Sandy) Kusuda, Nancy (Dan) Esterly, Frances (Dave) Sheegog, and Dave Kusuda. Mary also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, sister, Fusako Shibuya, brother, Masachika Tsuji, and several nieces and nephews.
Mary and her family returned to Mie-ken, Japan when she was 4 years old. In 1952 she crossed the Pacific Ocean once again and settled with relatives in Los Angeles. One of these relatives introduced her to Mike and they were married 4 months later. Mary later joined Mike and his siblings in owning and operating the Garden Grove Nursery & Flower Shop. She generously shared her sewing, crafting, and cooking talents with family and friends. Both Mary and Mike enjoyed the fellowship at Wintersburg Presbyterian Church and the church’s senior ministry. They were also active in VFW Post 3670 where they had many special friends. Mary and Mike enjoyed many activities together, including fishing, golfing, and traveling, but their favorite was supporting and encouraging their children and grandchildren in their numerous pursuits.
A memorial service and celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Wintersburg Presbyterian Church, 2000 N. Fairview St., Santa Ana, on Saturday, October 12, at 10:30 a.m. Dress is aloha casual.
