Margaret Sumiko Masuoka, 97, [née Funakoshi], beloved wife of David T. Masuoka (d.2015), mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away Dec. 17, 2019 in Oakland, Calif.

Born in Colorado in 1922, Margaret spent her early years in Los Angeles, Calif. She was interned at Poston, Ariz. with her family following the Japanese American evacuation order in 1942. She and David married shortly after the war and were married for 71 years when David passed away in 2015. They spent 55 happy years in the West L.A. community, where they raised their family.

Margaret was a dedicated volunteer along with her husband at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), in Los Angeles. Margaret was devoted to her family, was a wonderful cook and a passionate gardener. She will be missed dearly.

She is survived by sister Marion Manaka (Timber), children Susan Naomi, and James Ian (May Ng), grandchildren David Liam Orme (Lauriane Ramalli), Sydney, and nieces and nephews of two and three generations.

The family would like to acknowledge Kokoro Assisted Living in San Francisco and Lakeside Park Memory Care in Oakland, for helping make Margaret’s last days comfortable.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church, 961 S. Mariposa Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90006.

Flowers can be sent to the church for the memorial; donations to the Japanese American National Museum are greatly appreciated.
