EIKO KAMIYA MORIYAMA
Passed away peacefully on Sept. 16, 2020.
She was born Nov. 2, 1943 in the Rohwer War Relocation Center, in Arkansas, to Kaei and Waseko Kamiya. After the war, they moved to Boyle Heights. In 1947 they settled in Gardena where she grew up and graduated from Gardena High School.
She attended USC where she earned her B.S. and M.S. in Education in 1965.
She wed her high school sweetheart Edward Moriyama in 1966 and their only child, Candace was born in 1977.
She traveled widely around the world visiting friends and collecting special souvenirs from her travels.
Her teaching career started at Fremont High School in Los Angeles in 1965 where she taught Physical Education. She was promoted to the LAUSD Headquarters to be Assistant Director of Adopt-a-School Program where she met many community & business leaders to connect them with schools in the district. She took a short hiatus to become the assistant athletic director for USC. She then returned to LAUSD in teacher recruitment. Next, she became the Director of the Partnerships and Adopt-a-School Program. She retired in 2006 after 40 years of dedicated service.
Eiko is survived by her daughter, Candace; and her son-in-law John So; grandchildren Colby and Aiyumi; sister Lily Sugino; brother Eiichi Kamiya; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Due to health concerns from the Covid-19 Pandemic, there will not be any services held.
