Ruby Hiroko Okamoto, 93-year-old Sacramento, Calif.-born Nisei and long-time resident of Venice/Playa Del Rey, passed away on Dec. 5, 2020 in Los Angeles. Funeral services will be held at a later date, with Rev. Kory Quon of Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.
Ruby was raised in Los Angeles and Hiroshima, and loved Southern California. She is survived by her son, Quinn Okamoto; brother, Kay (Soddie) Okamoto of Carlsbad; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives here and in Japan. She was interested in politics and was active in many political campaigns when she was younger. In 1960, she was one of four JA women who served as guides for the delegates at the Democratic Convention in Los Angeles when John F. Kennedy was nominated. She was able to shake hands with Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt and remembered being inspired by their speeches.
