Masae “Massey” Arima
June 2, 1923 — December 19, 2020
Our family said a tearful farewell to our beloved mom, grandma and GGma, Masae “Massey” Arima, on December 19, 2020.
Masae Arima was born in Torrance, Calif. on June 2, 1923 to parents, Kiyonobu and Haruno Masuda. They, along with brothers Hajimu and Hiroshi, sister Emiko Komai and second husband, Jim Arima, preceded her in death. Survived by her sisters: Kiyoko Higuchi and Tayeko Iwanaga, as well as sister-in-law Seiko Sugino. Lovingly remembered by her children: Lynne (Craig Butch) Yonemura, Lester (Lynn) Sugino, Ilene (Joe Johnson) Sugino and Joyce (Kevin Kaya) Sugino. Proud grandma to Melissa Choi, Jana Yonemura-Wong, Kelly Sugino, Kerry Johnson, and Keana Kaya. GGma to 3 great-grandsons: Kayson Choi, Caleb Wong, and Kellan Choi.
Rest easy, Mom, you held our family together throughout the years. Alzheimer’s stole parts of your memory but did not rob you of your innate sweetness, kindness, sense of humor or your love of family.
Your wings were ready but our hearts were not.
In lieu of koden or flowers, our family suggests a donation in Masae’s name to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (alzfdn.org), Best Friends Animal Society (bestfriends.org) or a favorite charity of your choice.
Burial service will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held in the near future.
