Mary Sayoko Tomiyama

Mary Sayoko Tomiyama of San Diego passed away peacefully on March 31, 2021, at the age of 102. She was born on May 5, 1918, in Pierce, Colo., to Wasa and Kiyotaro Osaki, the fourth of seven siblings. She relocated to San Diego in 1936 upon her marriage to husband Noboru that lasted until his death in 1982. She was also predeceased by sons-in-law George Yamamoto and Roy Yonekura. She is survived by daughters, Ann Yamamoto and Susan Yonekura; and sons, Alan (Akiko), Steven (Akie) and Bruce (Doreen) Tomiyama. She is also survived by grandchildren, Guy Yamamoto, Jami (Eugene) Jones, Kristen (Christopher) Schmidt, Garrick (Melanie) Tomiyama, Lorin (Brian) Sasaki, Gregg Yonekura, Alissa Tomiyama, and Erin, Ryan and Kellen Tomiyama. In addition, she has ten great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives in California, Colorado, Canada and Japan.

A life-long Buddhist, she was a devoted member of the Buddhist Temple of San Diego and its Buddhist Women’s Association. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, no services are planned at this time.
