Masayoshi George Seto
February 4, 1943 – April 13, 2021

Masayoshi George Seto, a resident of Newport Beach, CA, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2021, at the age of 78. He was born in Tokyo, the second of two sons of Ichiro and Yetsuko (Onomiya) Seto.

George spent his childhood growing up in Kumamoto prefecture, (Kyushu) Japan and immigrated to Los Angeles, CA in 1956. He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School (LA) in 1962. He also continued his studies to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Los Angeles Trade Technical College in 1964. During his schooling, he also worked at his parents’ family Japanese restaurant in Boyle Heights, Otemo Sushi Cafe.

George became a passionate restaurant entrepreneur. In 1978, he opened Matsu Japanese Restaurant in Huntington Beach, CA. He worked tirelessly for his family and employees to build a successful restaurant. Over the next three decades, he helped many former employees establish their own restaurants by providing encouragement and guidance. In 1999, George opened his second Japanese restaurant, Anjin in Costa Mesa, CA.

George enjoyed reading the newspaper, watching old Western movies, and taking family road trips. He also loved playing backgammon and spending time with his eight grandchildren.

George is survived by his wife of 53 years Nobuko (Osaki); sons, Eugene (Jennifer), Scott (Catherine); and daughter, Carol (Gene) Lee. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, Ryan, Brandon, Jacob, Gabriel, Owen Lee, and Ian Lee. He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother Masahiko Steve.

Due to COVID precautions, a private funeral and interment service was held at Rose Hills Memorial Park on May 1.
