Dr. Iwao George Kawakami, age 102, passed away peacefully at his home in West Los Angeles. George is survived by Toyoko, his wife of 70 years; and his children, Gary (Tracey), Debra (Michael) Izumi, Thomas (Ruth), Carole (John) Shumate, and James. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicole (Jae), Conner, Erin, and Justin Kawakami, Branden (Katrin), Jared (Lissa), and Reed Izumi, and Kyle (Jordy), Lauren, and Ryan Shumate; and relatives.
George was a general surgeon for over 40 years, an avid golfer, and veteran of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team during WWII. A private family service for George was held on Saturday, April 20, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. He will be dearly missed by family, friends, and relatives.
