A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy was killed on April 12 in an off-duty traffic collision in Torrance.
Deputy Daniel Okamoto joined the department in 2017 and was assigned to the Lomita Sheriff’s Station.
The crash occurred in the early morning hours at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Skypark Drive, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. No further details were given.
Lomita Sheriff’s Station in statement expressed devastation at the loss of Okamoto:
“Deputy Okamoto was a leader at our station, a former training officer, a South Patrol Division All Star award winner, and member of our community outreach team. Deputy Okamoto is irreplaceable and we, along with the rest of the communities we serve, will feel his loss every day.”
Okamoto dedicated himself to serving the communities of Lomita, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates and San Pedro.
In a statement on social media, Sheriff Robert Luna said Okamoto “was known for his professionalism, humility and unwavering commitment to his friends and colleagues. Our LASD family is mourning his loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and partners during this difficult time.”
Carson Sheriff’s Station posted: “Our Carson Station family mourns the loss of Deputy Daniel Okamoto, who was assigned to @Lasd Lomita. He served as an explorer at Carson Station for many years and was loved by many within the department. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and partners during this incredibly difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”
Okamoto’s survivors include his parents, grandmother and brother.
