“The Crimson Kimono” (1959, 82 minutes) will be screened in 35mm on Sunday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at the Ted Mann Theater, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, 6067 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles.
James Shigeta and Glenn Corbett play two LAPD detectives who fall in love with the same woman, Christine (Victoria Shaw) in Samuel Fuller’s film noir.
“Fuller’s groundbreaking feature stimulates more than a sensational thrill anticipated by its genre; he dares depict a love story between an Asian man and a white woman in the 1950s, which carries its own intensity incorporated in the narrative of a murder investigation taking place in the Little Tokyo district of L.A.,” the museum said.
The film includes scenes of familiar locations as they appeared in the late 1950s, including Koyasan Buddhist Temple, Maryknoll Catholic Church, and Evergreen Cemetery in Boyle Heights. The climax takes place during the Nisei Week Parade, which was held at night in those days. Viewers may also recognize future **Rafu** columnist George Yoshinaga in a small role.
