On August 13, 2024, Alice Umeno Ige passed away quietly at home. She was born Umeno Tamashiro on August 27, 1923, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her parents were Sanhachi Tamashiro and Masa Chinen, both migrants from Okinawa, Japan. Immigrants and their children were often assigned Americanized names. Umeno was given the name Alice at school, and after marrying Saburo Ige, became Alice Umeno Ige.

Alice was afflicted with arthritis most of her life but remained active with her gardening, cooking, quilting, and puzzle games. Her optimism and cheerfulness sustained her throughout her life.

Her husband, Saburo, and daughter, Kathryn Ige-Guillen, predeceased Alice.

Alice is well loved and will be missed greatly by two sons and their wives, Fred and Christine Ige, and Rodney and Janice Ige; four grandchildren and their spouses, Zacten and Tuyen Ige, Reiko and Scott Toshima, Kalani Ige-Guillen, and Garrett Ige; and five great-grandchildren, Mikala, Kalia, Acen, Zedd and Titan.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family and Alice would appreciate donations going to the Arthritis Foundation.

A memorial service will be held at the Pasadena Buddhist Temple, 1993 Glen Ave., Pasadena, CA 91103, on Saturday, September 7, 2024, 11 a.m.  A Hawaiian luncheon reception will immediately follow. Attire for the memorial service and reception will be smart Hawaiian.
