Dave Tom of South Pasadena traveled to Japan’s northernmost main island of Hokkaido in June, for the color and pageantry of the annual Yosakoi Soran Festival.

The event is an epic dance competition takes place at the Odori Park in Sapporo.

The streets are closed off on either side of the park allowing dancers to perform in front of thousands of spectators.

The energetic performers dance in sync to upbeat music wearing vibrant make-up, colorful costumes and waving huge flags.

The admission to this event is free for everyone. However, there is a charge of approximately $10 for bleacher seats.

There are plenty of vendors selling popular food and drinks from Hokkaido throughout the festival. Sovenirs and exclusive event gifts are also available.

Tom reported that the dedication and the commitment from the performers, along with their elaborate outfits, make this event a must-see.
