Alhambra will rely heavily on senior Megan Lai (left) and junior Emilie Taniguchi to lead their offense from the point guard position and pave the way to a playoff return.

Taniguchi drives as the Moors prepared for this week’s games. After a break for finals the Moors open a tournament against Ramona Convent on Dec. 27.

It’s still early in the season, but first-year varsity head coach Bernard De Leon certainly is an enviable position when it comes to point guards.

“They picking it up, learning and applying what it takes to win,” De Leon said Tuesday during the Alhambra girls’ workout after school.

After missing out on last years’ playoffs with a .500 record in the Almont League, the Moors have some assets that could prove to be game-changers, notably at the point guard position.
Megan Lai was the star of the Alhambra offense last year, and returns for her senior year with a vastly improved supporting cast.

Lai looks for a passing opportunity during Tuesday’s team practice.

“Knowing the struggles we’ve had in the past, we know what we need to do, and there’s a clear difference this year,” Lai said. “We’ve had three head coaches in four years, so we’re adjusting and so far, it’s going pretty well.”

De Leon said the Moors will rely on Lai’s experience as much as her talent.

“She was almost a one-woman show last year, and this season, we’ll have a better team around her.”

Alhambra will also have the benefit of sharp-shooting junior Emilie Taniguchi, who despite only playing competitive basketball since middle school, will be the other x-factor at point guard.

“At first, I was a little scared to play in high school; it’s really a higher level,” said Taniguchi. “But I’m learning quickly, and everyone here is enjoying the experience we’re having as a team.”
